When a Little Chapstick
Goes a Long Way

Checking Frizzy Hair and an Instant Face Moisturizer

by Jane Callahan

We’ve all been there: after some hellish journey on a train, plane, or automobile you look like you’ve just finished a session at a boot camp where make-up and hairbrushes are illegal. Since Murphy’s Law has proved its existence to all of us, you happen to notice that the best-looking man on this side of the equator has sat down next to you.

In this situation I have found a fifty-cent tube of chap stick to be my best friend, especially in winter. One of the biggest problems with traveling, particularly in a plane, is that the air is dry and re-circulated. This is going to make your hair static and flat. Fear not, chapstick is an easy solution: rub the chapstick on the tips of all five fingers generously, and then pat down your fly-aways at the part.

If you have thick hair, you can also rub it in at the ends of your hair. This is not recommended for people with fine or thinning hair, as it will only make it look greasy and weighed down. For those of you with curly hair, massaging the chapstick into your roots can separate your curls and give way to some volume. Next, dab a bit on your eyebrows. This will make them look tamer as well as giving them a healthy sheen.

Chapstick Helps to Moisturize in a Pinch

For the face, I like to use chapsticks that turn a rosy pink upon application. Softlips sells a brand that warms to a pink hue once it hits the skin. Apply some to the apples of your cheeks, your eyelids (but not too much!) and of course, your lips. This is especially good if you have dry skin, because this will also help moisturize and disguise flaky skin. Test the product first to see how pink it gets on the inside of your wrist; otherwise you may find yourself looking like a lobster.

Make sure you’re not using a chapstick that is medicated or lists menthol as an ingredient; putting that on your eyelids and cheeks is going to make you teary-eyed and runny-nosed, putting you in the Oscar running for best dramatic actress.

Next time your hair frizzes out on you or your face is feeling dry and flaky, look to the familiar: Chapstick can save the day!
