2006 Color Trends for
Women’s Hair Part 1

by Alexis Arenas

This is my favorite time of year for hairstyles. It’s winter so most of us are under wraps but we are thinking of those soon-to-be warm spring days and letting our locks out for a romp. You can’t help but think about your look and style when you think to the approaching warmth and your need to unwrap. For me, thinking about hairstyles of the future and making predictions is far more exciting than the period of year-end reviews we are enduring now.

Looking into my crystal ball I see some hairstyle concepts from 2005 making their way into full-blown trends in 2006. What I like most about the upcoming year is a proliferation of different and creative hair colors. We saw the beginnings of this flowering in 2005 in some major ways and it can only continue throughout 2006. There are a lot of colors that will make a big splash in hair this year and I think that is the biggest news – the shear variety of hair colors that will be lauded and cheered over the next 12-18 months.

I’m going to need at least three runs at hair color to get you up to date on the best upcoming colors. This article is all about the different shades of blonde that will emerge as popular choices this year.

Classic Blonde

It will always be in style, what can I say. As with many styles this year we will not see radical departures from the past, instead we will see creative modifications on a standard. This will be the year of fun and creative tweaking. You can see in this photo of the classic blonde with straight hair that there are two major updates. Layers: her layers are cut at drastically different lengths – this gives you a more breezy feeling, as if you are enjoying the evening on the top deck of a finely appointed yacht. Roots: this year let your roots come in at varying lengths to add a sense of depth to your hair.

Classic Blonde with Big Curls

I love the big curl look. It has an I’m-all-grown-up feel that remains coy-fully playful and youth inspiring. This hairstyle is great for all ages and most face shapes. Tip: you can do big curls with almost any hair length.

Golden Blonde

I like to call this Lemon Rind Blonde. It has more richness to it than the “lemonade” blonde above. Like I said before, this year is all about variety and this is another shade to add to the palette. I would think about changing my color up to 4 times this year – mix it up and have some fun!

Highlights

Up a couple shades and down a couple shades. Highlights are a key ingredient to variety and creativity. By adding lots of different highlights (try light reds and even brunettes with blonde) you will build depth and interest in your hairstyle. Again, this will work for you with short, medium, or long hair.

Copper Blonde

A fantastic color for 2006. This hair color is sexy, smart, and sophisticated. It seems sun-kissed and librarian tidy all at the same time – I adore it. And it looks great on all skin tones. Do this hair color at least once this year.

Tangerine Blonde

A seemingly radically red hair – I’m calling this Tangerine Blonde for 2006. Yet another worthy hair color for your palette. This color is going to match better with lighter skin tones; however, if your skin is darker do this bright red blonde and achieve a stunningly stark combination – you’ll look like a fire goddess I promise!
