Roughing the Winter Without Rough Skin

by Miss Janis (originally posted on her blog Showing Some Skin)

The combination of cold temperatures and dry warm air can leave your skin feeling 100 years old. It's important to protect and hydrate your skin through the winter. Keeping skin well moisturized slows down the signs of aging and keeps you feeling soft and smooth.

1. Pick the right body moisturizer. Especially in the winter, it's important to buy a REAL moisturizer that is more than just runny lotion and fragrance (I'm looking at you Bath and Body Works). Choose a thicker body lotion marked for extra moisture or hydration. I LOVE Aveeno products but other companies produce excellent lotions as well. The key: you shouldn't have to apply a good lotion more than once a day.

2. Have a good lip balm on hand. Stay away from products like Carmex or Burt's Bees. These feel great going on, but you end up applying several times a day to keep up with the resulting dryness. Stick with products from Chapstick, Neosporin and Vasoline. 'Medicated' chapsticks work the best in winter.

3. Go thicker on your face. During the really cold winter months (I live in Minneapolis!), I can get away with using a thicker more rich moisturizer than in the summer. I usually go with a day-wear anti-wrinkle or hydrating cream (Neutrogena, L'Oreal). If this makes you break out anyway, just apply your regular moisturizer more often as needed.
