If You Gotta Shave, Do it Right

by Miss Janis (originally posted on her blog Showing Some Skin)

I hate shaving. I just wanted to get that out in the open.

I do it, of course. But if I could afford it, I would so get waxed by a professional every three weeks. (The best waxing I've ever gotten was at the spa at Mandalay Bay in Vegas. I wanted to take that woman home with me!) I've tried some home waxing kits (and plan to try more - stay tuned) but we all have to fall back on the old razor from time to time. Here's some tips on shaving those sensitive areas and making the smoothness last:

1. Exfoliate - If you're not doing this you're crazy! I recommend something mild like a sugar or salt scrub or a soft body brush - scrubs made of nut or sea shells can be too abraisive. I know it takes extra time, but you'll have to shave less often, and get less ingrown hairs. (Plus it feels fantastic.)

2. Turn the temperature down - It's best to shave in luke ware water, not super hot or cold. This will keep you from getting those goose bumps that undo all your good work.

3. Use a new razor - We all want to hang on to those Venus shaver heads forever but it's important to let them go after a while. If you shave everyday, recycle them every two weeks at least.

4. Shaving gels work best - For the closest shave, use gel-based shaving creams. I find very creamy shower wash's work well too.

5. Skip a day if you need to - For some people, shaving daily irritates your skin, making it swell and easier to cut with the razor. If you need to, don't be afraid to skip a day or two to give your skin a break.
